GRAPEL ("Grabado sobre pelĂcula", engraving on film) is a sculpture carved on a radiographic film's surface.

The Grapel. Its elements are:

1. MATTERS.

A black, fully fogged radiography situated on a white working background. This kind of film is just a fewmicrons wide and consist of two parts:

  • An emulsified layer (black layer).
  • A plastic base (either bluish or transparent).

2. Tool.

A scalpel or a bistoury, directly driven by the artist's fingers to carve the emulsified layer.Punzón o bisturí sostenido directamente por los dedos del artista para raspar la capa de emulsión.

3. Action.

Carving slight incisions in the emulsified layer. As the carving goes deeper, a whole range of gray tones appears. When the plastic base is reached, a uniform bluish tone is achieved as a background. If the base is still futher consumed, white and transparence are approached.

4. Art.

The final artwork is the result of associating all the above technical elements with the engraver's artistic vision, which will emerge from the black film.
